The number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the Permian Basin decreased six this week to 560, according to the weekly rotary rig count released Friday by Houston-based oilfield services company Baker Hughes.

In District 8, which includes Midland County, the count was unchanged at 332.

Texas had 900 rigs statewide, a decrease of five. In other Texas basins, there were 205 rigs in the Eagle Ford, up two; 66 in the Granite Wash, down one; 46 in the Haynesville, up one; and 25 in the Barnett, unchanged.

At this time last year there were 452 rigs in the Permian Basin and 836 in Texas.

The U.S. rig count was unchanged this week at 1,931. There were 1,601 oil rigs, up nine; 329 gas rigs, down nine; and one rig listed as miscellaneous, unchanged.

By trajectory, there were 378 vertical drilling rigs, up six; 1,341 horizontal drilling rigs, down one; and 212 directional drilling rigs, down five.

A year ago this week there were 1,761 rigs in the U.S.
